Chapter 12 | The Skraeling

Skraeling is what the Vikings called the Native Americans they encountered in Greenland and beyond. Scholars don’t seem to be sure where the name came from, but it’s probably not very complimentary.

Thanks for reading! See you next week!

    • We do meet Fenrir! Eventually………… :D

  4. None of you boys better even THINK about breaking those chains. {looks at Loki out of habit}

  5. “Scholars don’t seem to be sure where the name came from, but it’s probably not very complimentary.” Ooh I just read about this yesterday! Tony Horwitz in A Voyage Long And Strange: Rediscovering the New World mentions that it probably came from the term “screaming wrenches” and that several native groups near Vinland (here in the modern day) have petitioned for the name to stop being used since yeah, that is insulting.

    • Yeaaaah I debated using it, but we can only guess where the name came from. Other places mention it came from a word for “savage”. Whatever its origins, it definitely means “not like us”.
